Car Subwoofer
A car subwoofer is used to enhance the sound system in the car. They are used to produce lower frequencies, and must be encased to work effectively. The type of enclosure in which the subwoofer is put could be a sealed enclosure, vented, band pass, or infinite baffle. When selecting a subwoofer for a car system it is important to look at the power or RMS – the amount of power that the car subwoofer can handle safely. Space is another consideration, as you want to match the space required by the type of subwoofer with the type of vehicle you have.
There are three common types of car subwoofers. Very popular is the bass tube, a subwoofer that is enclosed in a tube. The benefits to this one are that it saves some space in the car, and users can add bass to the system. Sound is decent on this type of arrangement, but not the highest sound quality you can achieve.
Another type is the standard subwoofer. These speakers are individually made to make it more convenient on the user, who selects an enclosure that will fit his/her needs. These come in many styles and sizes, and with the capability of producing the highest quality sound. These are very popular in the market, but also more expensive since they deliver better sound. Size on these can range from six to fifteen inches.
Another type of car subwoofer is self-amplified bass solution. This type is built inside the enclosure that is powered thru an in-line amplifier. It comes in many sizes to fit many types of vehicles. This type also saves space to the user, and allows for adding bass. Infinity is a popular brand on this style, and the creator of this type of subwoofer. The sound is good, but not the highest in quality, although infinity systems do have a reputation for quality with many car manufacturers.
There are many brands and manufacturers of car subwoofers. These include Pyle, Bazooka, JL Audio, MTX, Kicker, Alpine, Pioneer, Rockford, Kenwood, Lanzar Vector, Sony, Boss, Pyramid, Dual, Legacy, Clarion, Harman, and many others brands. Many models perform at different levels and quality. Prices range from low to over $1,000.
Styles vary from square, in classic black to more modern styles with inside illumination and neon colors. Some styles are made to be seen while others are designed to be hidden, depending on personal preference. A car subwoofer will need more amplified bass than any other part of the system. The bigger the subwoofer, the more bass it will give, however, it will also need a bigger box. However, size does not relate to quality, as a large 12-15 inch car subwoofer that is cheaper might have a lower quality sound than a smaller 8-10 inch subwoofer. If you like bass that has more boom, then larger subwoofers will give you that type of sound; however, if you prefer a tighter and controlled sound experience, a smaller subwoofer will be better. However, the type of box that is custom made or bought for an enclosure, will determine quality of sound as well.
